For Samsung fanatics, the anticipation, speculation and rumours are all over. The tech giants have finally announced that two new phones will be hitting the market as early as April 10th. Yes, you read that correctly, there will be TWO new phones which is sure to spark Android vs iOS debates, as this sounds very similar to the last two Apple iPhone events where we have seen a couple of phone choices.
The first phone is an upgrade from the Galaxy S5, which will be branded the Galaxy S6…no real surprises there. The second phone that has taken people by surprise is the Galaxy S6 Edge, a phone that sports a curved display that wraps around the side of the Smartphone.
In terms of specifications, both the Edge and standard Galaxy S6 will be near enough identical in what they are offering, the major difference is that curved screen which will put the price up. It also leads us to believe that we may see more repairs come in for this type of phone, as a simple drop on the front or sides could result in some serious smashed screens!
Perhaps the biggest announcement is that Samsung have finally decided to drop the plastic design in favour of the more popular metal body. A move that should please a lot of fans out there.
The Samsung Galaxy S6
We all know that the Galaxy S5 didn’t really break any records when it was released in 2014, in-fact it sold less copies than the Galaxy S4. So since then Samsung have listened to user feedback and improved this years take on the Galaxy range, something you can clearly see as well.
Firstly they have increased screen resolution which now comes in at 577 pixels per inch and the ability to take the screen 20% brighter than you normally could. Samsung have also ditched Qualcomm in order to bring the design in-house, and create their own 14 nanometre processor which should prove to be a lot more energy efficient on the new Galaxy S6.
Sticking to the theme of energy efficiency the new battery that comes in both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge should recharge to 50% within just half an hour of being plugged in, as well as support wireless charging.
Nothing has been changed with the rear facing camera, this will remain at the 16-megapixel threshold, but the front facing (selfie) camera has been upgraded to 5-megapixels. A nice touch considering selfies are definitely a major part of peoples lives these days.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
Moving on to the S6 Edge and the first thing you will be greeted with is this spectacular curved screen design that just overlaps the sides, completely removing the standard bezel.
There are a couple of practical uses for this new curved design. The first is called People Edge which offers users a quick way to see calls, texts and other messages from 5 people (that you can select), which are all assigned a different colour. When one of these selected contacts texts you or calls you, the phone will flash that colour across the edges even if the phone is lying with its screen facing down.
The second is that the curved part can be used to display the time, weather and other selected notifications. I’m not quite sure just how beneficial or practical this can be, only time will tell.
Prices and Launch Dates
Prices aren’t available at the time of writing, but both flagship handsets go on sale across 20 countries, including the UK starting from 10th April.
